This guide sets up your own domain for my email service and then connects your apps. You need access to the DNS settings of your domain.
Step 1: DNS records
Add these values at your domain provider and replace example.com with your domain:
| Name | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
@ | MX | mx.weingaertner-it.de, priority 10 |
autoconfig | CNAME | mx.weingaertner-it.de |
autodiscover | CNAME | mx.weingaertner-it.de |
_autodiscover._tcp | SRV | 0 10 443 mx.weingaertner-it.de |
@ | TXT | v=spf1 mx ~all |
dkim._domainkey | TXT | Value from the admin panel, see below |
_dmarc | TXT | v=DMARC1; p=quarantine; rua=mailto:postmaster@example.com |
You will find the DKIM value in the admin panel under your domain. It is different for every domain.
Important: A domain can only have one SPF record. If you also send through another service, for example for newsletters, add it to the same record. Remove old MX records, otherwise email ends up with your previous provider.
Step 2: Test
dig +short MX example.com
dig +short TXT example.com
dig +short TXT dkim._domainkey.example.com
dig +short TXT _dmarc.example.com
Each line has to show your new values. Changes take a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the provider.
Step 3: Create addresses
Log in with your credentials at mx.weingaertner-it.de. This is where you create mailboxes and aliases.
Step 4: Connect your apps
Thanks to the DNS records, Thunderbird usually finds the settings by itself. You only enter your address and password. Otherwise, use these values:
| Service | Server | Port | Encryption |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMAP | mx.weingaertner-it.de | 993 | SSL/TLS |
| POP3 | mx.weingaertner-it.de | 995 | SSL/TLS |
| SMTP | mx.weingaertner-it.de | 465 | SSL/TLS |
| SMTP (alternative) | mx.weingaertner-it.de | 587 | STARTTLS |
Your username is always your full email address.
| Feature | Address |
|---|---|
| Webmail | mx.weingaertner-it.de/SOGo/ |
| Calendar and contacts (CalDAV, CardDAV) | https://mx.weingaertner-it.de/SOGo/dav/ |
| ActiveSync (phone, Exchange account) | Server mx.weingaertner-it.de |
If it does not work
- Email lands in spam: Check SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Most often the DKIM record is missing or cut off.
- DKIM record too long: Some providers want long values in several parts. Paste the full value without line breaks.
- Receiving fails: Check whether an old MX record is still there.
- Sending fails, receiving works: Outgoing mail needs authentication, with the same details as incoming mail.
- Login fails: Check that you use your full address as the username. After several failed attempts, your IP address is blocked for a while.
